1) Oil Palm Frond (OPF)


OPF is on of the most abundant agricultural by-products in Malaysia. Almost all pruned fronds are discarded in the plantation, mainly for nutrient recycling and soil conservation. OPF has a great potential for use as a roughage source or as a component in compound feed for ruminants especially for fiber source. Fermented OPF would produce additional nutrient in term of protein up to 1.5% - 2.5%.


Dry OPF can be stored for long period of time up to 2 years and can be used up to 30% - 50% of the formulated feed depends on other raw materials. As matter of fact OPF also can be crushed, dried and compacted for use as fuel in wood fired boilers / co-firing in power plants.

2) Oil Palm Trunk (OPT)


Oil palm is replanted on an average after 25 years. During replanting, the bole length of felled palm trunk is in the range of 7m to 13m, with a diameter of 45cm to 65cm, measured at breast height.


OPT has been utilized to replaced wood supply. It has been used in Plywood, Veneer, MDF, Furniture and Flooring industries. Palm Wood has been introduce to the world market.


OPT also can be chipped or grained to become various products. Any suggestion is welcomed to make full used of this potential Palm Wood.

4) Palm Kernel Shell (PKS)


During the crude palm oil process, the fruit flesh is melted through a steaming treatment. The residual nuts are further mechanically crashed to extract the seeds or Kernels. The crashed shells are virgin biomass called Palm Kernel Shells (PKS). PKS can be considered like a natural pellet and a high grade solid renewable fuel for burning.

Palm Kernel Shell is an ideal green fuel which substitutes the conventional fossil fuels such as coal. It can be used in:-

3) Empty Fruit Bunch (EFB) - raw and shredded.


At the palm oil mill, the sterilized fresh fruit bunches go through a threshing process to separate the sterilized fruits from the bunches. The fruit bunch is made up of a main stalk and numerous spikelets with sharp spines at their tips.


EFB has been used in many industries such as Pulp and Paper, MDF and Compost Fertilizer. Shredding process cut EFB into smaller and loose structure, which improve the volume-weight ratio.  This enhance the bio-fuel characteristic.


· Moisture 35% - 55%

· it need to be further dry up at the biomass plant right before the burning process or it was dry enough during transportation.


· Calorific/kg : 18800kJ

· Due to its low chlorine content, shredded EFB fiber is a safe and sustainable bio-fuel resource  to replace petroleum and coal to produce bio-fuel briquette.


· Raw Shredded EFB can be use as solid fuel for steam boiler.

· Many companies also have started to replace their fossil fuel by using Shredded EFB for biomass boiler combustion process; those companies experience cost saving for this change.

7) Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME)


The production of palm oil results in the generation of large quantities of polluted wastewater, commonly referred to as POME. Typically 1 tonne of crude palm oil production requires 5 - 7.5 tones of water, over 50% of which ends up as POME. Based on palm oil production in 2005 (14.8 million tones), an average of about 53 million m³ POME as being produced per year in Malaysia.


The POME comprises a combination of wastewater from three main sources viz. clarification (60 %), sterilization (36 %) and hydrocyclone (4%) units. It contains various suspended components including cell walls, organelles, short fibres, a spectrum of carbohydrates ranging from hemicellulose to simple sugars, a range of nitrogenous compounds from proteins to amino acids, free organic acids and an assembly of minor organic and mineral constituents.

8) Dry Decanter Cake (DDC)


Decanter Cake is the by-product from Crude Palm Oil production. After drying process it can be use as raw material for animal feed mainly as protein and energy source.

5) Mesocarp Fiber.


Palm Fruit length about 5cm and is in oval shape. It consists of yellowish red oily flesh mesocarp and single seed Palm Kernel Nut. At crude palm oil mill, palm fruit is cook under hot steam and pressed for oil extraction, with Mesocarp Fiber and Palm Kernel Nut as left over mass.


The Mesocarp Fiber is then separated from Palm Kernel Nut by cyclone separator.  Mesocarp fiber is an elongated cellulose with 30-50mm length.

9) Ash


Ash been produce after burning mixed of mesocarp fiber and empty fruit bunch (EFB) in boiler to generate power for oil palm mill. Sometimes excesses EFB also been burning to produced ash.


Application, ash can be mixed in the fertilizer process to add more nutrient for plant growth. The ash also has been used as part of the mixed in the tar road.
